The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has cautioned AFL players against taking part in the promotion of online gambling services that the regulator describes as illegal. The services in question do not hold a licence to operate in Australia, and some products, such as online casinos, are banned in the country altogether.

The regulator named two former footballers, Mitch Robinson and Rhys Mathieson, who have built followings as online influencers since their playing careers ended. According to ACMA, both engaged with prohibited online gambling services and breached Australian gambling rules.

ACMA member Carolyn Lidgerwood said the pair accepted responsibility after being contacted about their conduct. She said they promptly ended their involvement with Vegastars and removed all promotional material. The regulator has now issued each of them a formal warning to ensure they comply with the law in future.

Lidgerwood said the authority is stepping up its efforts to push back against such advertising and partnerships. "Illegal gambling services can cause significant financial harm to individuals and families, and influencers need to be aware that promoting these services is against the law," she said. She added that social media influencers, whether celebrities or simply prominent users of a platform, risk enforcement action if they promote illegal gambling content. At this stage such action mostly takes the form of fines.

The case reflects a tougher approach to individuals and public figures, including current and former athletes, who may be advertising unlicensed operators. Gambling platforms often offer celebrities and influencers substantial payments for sharing social media posts or including referral links on their pages.

New rules covering advertising by social media influencers for gambling are also due to take effect on 1 January 2027, adding to the regulatory pressure on promotion of gambling in Australia.
