A Mega Millions player in New York has won $5 million after matching all five white balls in the drawing held on Friday, 16 October, but missing the gold Mega Ball. The ticket carried a 5x multiplier, which raised the Match 5 prize to $5 million, according to the official announcement.

The winning numbers were 2, 15, 31, 41 and 68, with a gold Mega Ball of 1. The estimated jackpot for that draw was $403 million, with a cash option of $162.1 million. Nobody matched all six numbers, so the top prize rolled over.

The drawing also produced a group of five-figure winners who matched four white numbers plus the gold Mega Ball. Six players won $20,000 each with a 2x multiplier, four won $30,000 each with a 3x multiplier, and one won $50,000 with a 5x multiplier. That $50,000 payout was the largest of the tier.

With the jackpot unclaimed, the estimated top prize for the next drawing on Tuesday, 20 October, has risen to $413 million. A winner would have the choice between an annuity paid out over time for the full amount or a one-time lump sum of $170.3 million.

Recent drawings have produced several large secondary prizes. The previous draw had no Match 5 winners, though seven players took five-figure sums of up to $40,000. Before that, a New Jersey player and a Florida player each matched all five white numbers to win $2 million and $3 million respectively, and a Wisconsin player won a $4 million Match 5 prize.

The jackpot itself has not been hit for some time. The most recent top prize was won in July by a player in Florida, who claimed $800 million.
