Indonesia's government says it has taken down more than 4 million items of online gambling content as part of its campaign against unregulated gaming. Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid presented the figures at Bali Tech Week 2026 on October 19.

According to the minister, authorities removed 5.15 million items of negative digital content between October 2024 and September 11, 2026. Gambling-related material accounted for more than 4 million of those items, making it the largest share of the reported removals. The totals cover gambling promotions as well as content connected to gambling operations, so the scope goes beyond advertising alone.

The figures describe volumes of content removed from online platforms. They are not a count of individual gambling operators or users, and the overall total also includes negative content unrelated to gambling.

Online gambling is prohibited under Indonesian national law, and the takedowns reflect the government's continued strict stance on unauthorized gaming. Oversight of online channels has become a central element of the response, which is intended to reduce unauthorized digital gaming operations and protect consumers from unlicensed platforms targeting local users.

Hafid also highlighted biometric verification for new mobile SIM registrations. The measure is meant to secure telecommunications network infrastructure and to prevent accounts tied to illegal online gambling from being created anonymously. Official data cited in the report shows that 31.1 million mobile users have completed biometric verification. That number measures participation in the verification process and is separate from the content removal totals.

The two measures address different parts of the problem. Content takedowns deal with material already online, while SIM registration checks focus on verifying users and limiting anonymous account creation. Both were presented as components of Indonesia's wider action against illicit digital activity.
