MotorCity Casino seeks default judgment against rapper Offset over unpaid $100,000 credit line
MotorCity Casino Hotel has moved for a default judgment against rapper Offset after his lawyers missed the deadline to respond to a suit over an unpaid $100,000 casino marker. No final judgment has been entered.
MotorCity Casino Hotel is pursuing a default judgment against the American rapper Kiari Kendrell Cephus, known as Offset, in a dispute over a $100,000 credit line that the casino says was never repaid.
The casino filed its lawsuit earlier this year. According to the complaint, the credit line was opened in 2024 when the rapper visited the property to play. The casino alleges that Offset signed a marker tied to his checking account, which allowed it to withdraw the funds. When MotorCity attempted to collect, the withdrawal failed because of insufficient funds.
On that basis, the suit asserts breach of contract and a violation of Michigan's bad check statute. Under that statute, plaintiffs can seek double the unpaid marker amount plus legal fees.
The case has now taken a procedural turn because the defense did not file a response. In April, a representative for Offset said the rapper and his team hoped to resolve the matter, but no formal response was ever submitted. With the response deadline missed, a motion for default judgment has been filed. If granted, the court would rule on MotorCity's claims without considering a defense response.
No final judgment has been entered so far. Offset could still seek to have the default lifted if he can show a good reason for missing the deadline and present a credible legal defense.
The lawsuit adds to a series of casino-related incidents involving the rapper. He recently drew attention when a video showed him arguing with staff at a high-limit blackjack table at a casino in Paris over a seat that had been given to another player. He was also previously attacked outside the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, where a group of suspects tried to rob him. He was shot in the leg and released from the hospital four days later. Earlier rumors have suggested he may have experienced gambling problems.
