Megaways now in 680 titles from 94 studios as developers combine slot mechanics, guide finds
A European Gaming guide says Megaways appears in 680 titles from 94 studios and that developers increasingly blend several mechanics in one game. It also notes that RTP and volatility come from a game's maths model, not its mechanics.
A guide published by European Gaming looks at the slot mechanics most widely used in 2026. It reports that Megaways, first introduced by Big Time Gaming in 2015, is now found in 680 titles from 94 studios. That level of adoption, the guide says, makes it difficult for a game built around a single mechanic to stand out.
Among its key findings, the guide says developers are increasingly layering several mechanics in one release, for example Megaways combined with multiplier wilds and multiple bonus levels. The Pay Anywhere mechanic remains a major foundation: 377 of its 1,174 titles were released between January and August 2026.
The guide draws a distinction between mechanics and maths. Mechanics set the rules for how symbols land, how wins form and how features trigger, and they can shape the feel of a game. However, return to player (RTP) and volatility are determined by the underlying mathematical model. Two games can share identical core and bonus mechanics and still have very different RTP and volatility profiles.
The article lists the mechanics it considers most popular: Megaways, cascading or tumbling reels, cluster pays, Hold & Win, ways to win, expanding or sticky wilds, multipliers, bonus buy where permitted, and progressive jackpots. Megaways typically generates up to 117,649 ways to win per spin, though some games go higher. Big Time Gaming's Millionaire Megapots, launched in March 2026, offers up to 200,704 ways to win.
Other examples cited include BGaming's Train Heist Johnny Cash, released in July 2026, which pairs cascading reels with cluster pays on a 6x5 grid and clears every winning cluster so new symbols can drop in. Tom Horn Gaming's 3 Pots of Aladdin, released in October 2026, starts each Hold & Win round with three respins on a 3x3 grid and offers seven bonus variations built from jackpot, collector and multiplier features.
The guide also raises a player protection point. It says research links faster game events to longer play sessions, so the choice of mechanics matters for responsible gambling as well as for game design.
