Fed decision, dissent and inflation comments seen as key drivers for bitcoin and crypto markets
The Federal Reserve is expected to hold rates at 3.75%–4% while markets watch for dissent and Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks. The outcome could move the dollar and, in turn, bitcoin and other digital assets.
The Federal Reserve is set to announce its interest-rate decision at 2 p.m. ET, with Chair Kevin Warsh holding a press conference half an hour later. According to a CoinDesk newsletter, three themes could shape rate expectations and market direction, including digital assets.
The Federal Open Market Committee is widely expected to leave its benchmark rate unchanged in the 3.75%–4% range. That expectation has held since the September projections, in which most officials indicated just one more rate increase this year, with December seen as the most probable timing. Because a hold is the base case, any dissent carries extra weight. If three or more voting members favored a hike over a pause, it would point to rising urgency to tighten policy and could strengthen expectations of more aggressive increases. That scenario could lift the Dollar Index and potentially weigh on bitcoin.
The second theme is how the Fed describes financial conditions, which reflect credit availability in the economy. The 10-year Treasury yield has fallen to 5%, down 36 basis points since Oct. 7, while the 30-year yield has dropped by 40 basis points. That decline has eased conditions and supported risk-taking in financial markets. If Warsh acknowledges the easing, bets on rate increases in coming months could grow.
The third is Warsh's view on inflation. Consumer price inflation has exceeded expectations for two straight months, oil is hovering near $100, and U.S. diesel prices are at record highs. High energy costs leave him little room to signal a preference for growth over price stability.
Ahead of the meeting, bitcoin was trading around $81,411, up more than 2% over 24 hours. Ether, solana and XRP also gained more than 2%. The newsletter noted that, as ING has pointed out, the Dollar Index has tended to move in line with Warsh's messaging in the months following rate meetings. The dollar's path after today's decision could therefore bear on all markets, cryptocurrencies included.
